Pi Network was founded by two primary individuals with backgrounds from Stanford University: Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis (Head of Technology) and Dr. Chengdiao Fan (Head of Product). Launched on March 14, 2019, this innovative project aims to make crypto mining accessible to mainstream users via mobile devices. Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis is often recognized as the lead visionary; he holds a Stanford PhD, teaches Stanford's first decentralized applications class, and is a co-founder of the StartX accelerator. Dr. Chengdiao Fan focuses on product direction and user experience, drawing from her background in social computing and human-computer interaction. Vincent McPhillip, previously listed as a head of community and considered a co-founder, left the project in February 2021. The founders have prioritized building a 'mobile-first' mining experience, aiming to facilitate digital currency adoption, with the network transitioning toward an Open Network phase following its 2019 inception. Notably, Trent Marchand has also made contributions to the project's development.
